About this website

We’re helping WA get SHARK SMART. We have always enjoyed a beach going lifestyle here in Western Australia, so it’s important to understand the facts about sharks and the hazards they present. This website is put together so West Australians who love to use our amazing coastline – the surfers, swimmers and divers – can continue to do so.

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development

15 February 2018

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is involved in both operational responses and research initiatives as part of a suite of shark hazard mitigation strategies.

The Department is partnering with other stakeholders such as Surf Life Saving WA to develop new strategies for beach goers and users of the aquatic environment on the risks associated with sharks.

We are also undertaking additional research into sharks and overseeing the development of a community engagement strategy to improve public safety and raise awareness of shark response and alert procedures. The initiatives we have in place make sure response agencies can close beaches and the community can stay informed about sightings. In the longer term, the world class research programs we have put in place will help us understand the behaviour of sharks and implement better programs and interventions to keep people safe.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development comprises the former departments of Agriculture and Food, Fisheries and Regional Development, together with the staff of the Regional Development Commissions.
