Shark Mitigation Strategy

The Western Australian Government is working with its partners to protect our beach-going lifestyle. It’s important that the surfers, swimmers and divers who love to use our amazing coastline can continue to do so, while understanding the facts about sharks and the hazards they present.

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development

15 February 2018

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is involved in both operational responses and research initiatives as part of a suite of shark mitigation strategies.

The Department is partnering with other stakeholders such as Surf Life Saving WA to develop new strategies for beach goers and users of the aquatic environment on the risks associated with sharks.

We are also managing the scientific non-lethal SMART drumline trial, operational responses and community engagement to improve public safety and raise awareness of shark response and alert procedures. The initiatives in place make sure response agencies can close beaches and the community can stay informed about potential shark risks.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development comprises the former departments of Agriculture and Food, Fisheries and Regional Development, together with the staff of the Regional Development Commissions.

Visit the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development website.
