Shark Mitigation Strategy

The safety of water users is a priority for the Western Australian Government. 

While the risk of a shark attack is low, the State Government has implemented one of the strongest, evidence-based shark mitigation programs in the world, so that West Australians can continue to enjoy the beach and ocean with confidence.

Our shark mitigation strategy offers a comprehensive approach with a range of tools and actions to help keep ocean users and our coastal communities as safe as possible. 

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is involved in both operational responses and research initiatives as part of a suite of shark mitigation strategies.

Surf Life Saving WA is the state's peak coastal safety and rescue organisation. 

The Western Australia Water Police is responsible for policing Western Australia's extensive coastline, and its control centre is manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Surfing WA is the State’s governing body across all boarding codes including surfing, bodyboarding and stand up paddle boarding.
