Shark WARNING for Blackwall Reach, Swan River

23 December 2024

Alert level:

A shark WARNING has been issued for Blackwall Reach, Swan River after an increased number of reported shark detections.

Situation:

  • A bull shark has been detected multiple times over the past 3 days. 
  • This shark was tagged and released on 12 December 2024 at Minim Cove, Swan River.
  • It is possible that the frequency and duration of the recent reported tagged shark detections may increase the likelihood of encountering a shark in this area. 

What to do:

  • Take additional caution in the Swan River waters near Blackwall Reach.
  • Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA (SLSWA).
  • Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or follow @SLSWA on X (formerly Twitter).
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and @SLSWA on X.  

What authorities are doing: 

Officers from Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) will continue to monitor the situation.
