Shark INCIDENT offshore near Town of Port Hedland

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is currently involved in assisting WA Police with a serious shark bite incident that occurred offshore from Port Hedland.
Situation:
- At approximately 11.30 am on 7 October it was reported that a male spearfisher was bitten by an unconfirmed species of shark offshore from Port Hedland.
- The man sustained injuries after spearing a fish. He was taken to shore and attended to by St John’s Ambulance before being transported to hospital.
What to do:
- Take additional caution in the Port Hedland area.
- Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
- If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.

DPIRD is working with local authorities to coordinate responses.
