Shark INCIDENT at Gnarabup near Margaret River

Officers from the Shire of Augusta Margaret River have reopened beaches between Gas Bay and Margaret River Mouth Beach, following yesterday’s shark bite incident at Boat Ramp Surfing Spot.  

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) recommends additional caution in the Gnarabup and Prevelly area.

If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.

Alert issued on 24 July 

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) are currently coordinating responses for a shark bite incident at Boat Ramp Surfing Spot, near Gnarabup Beach in the Shire of Augusta Margaret River.

Situation:

  • A male surfer sustained injuries after being bitten by a reported white shark at approximately 8:45am on Monday 24 July 2023. 
  • Officers from the Shire of Augusta Margaret River have closed beaches from Gas Bay to Margaret River Mouth. 

What to do:

  • Take additional caution in the Gnarabup and Prevelly area.
  • Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA.
  • Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.
