Shark INCIDENT for Elephant Rock near Hamelin Bay

Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, have completed land based patrols at Elephant Rock and the surrounding area today.
DPIRD’s response to coordinating the incident at Elephant Rock, south of Hamelin Bay has now concluded.
DPIRD recommends additional caution in the Elephant Rock and Deepdene Beach area.

Alert issued on 27 March
Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) are currently investigating a shark bite incident at Elephant Rock, south of Hamelin Bay in the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River.
Situation:
- A male snorkeler received minor injuries after being bitten by a reported wobbegong shark at approximately 12:00pm on 27 March 2021.
- The incident occurred at Elephant Rock, near Deepdene Beach, south of Hamelin Bay.
- The incident was reported to Water Police at 4:30pm today
What to do:
- Take additional caution in the Elephant Rock and Deepdene Beach area.
- Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA.
- Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
- If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.
