Shark INCIDENT at Wharton Beach, Cape Le Grand National Park
10 March 2025The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is currently involved in assisting WA Police with a serious shark bite incident at Wharton Beach in the Shire of Esperance.
Situation:
- DPIRD received a report of a shark bite incident at approximately 12:17pm on 10 March 2025 involving a surfer at Wharton Beach.
- A surfboard has been recovered, but the surfer has not been sighted.
- WA Police are currently coordinating a search for the missing surfer.
- Shire of Esperance rangers have closed Wharton Beach.
What to do:
- Take additional caution in the Wharton Beach area.
- Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA (SLSWA).
- Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or follow @SLSWA on X (formerly Twitter).
- If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and @SLSWA on X.

DPIRD is working with WA Police and local authorities to coordinate responses.
