Shark INCIDENT at Sandland Island near Jurien Bay

Fisheries officers from Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) and Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), have completed an on-water patrol near Sandland Island and the surrounding area today, with no further shark sightings reported.

DBCA and the Shire of Dandaragan have reopened the beaches following the shark incident on Monday 26 February 2024.

DPIRD recommends additional caution in the Jurien Bay area.

Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and Shire of Dandaragan have closed beaches between DN48 Sandy Cape BEN Sign to DN122 North Head BEN Sign following a shark incident this morning near Sandland Island. 

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development recommends additional caution in the Jurien Bay area.

Alert Issued 26 February 2024

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is currently coordinating the response for a shark incident at Sandland Island, north of Jurien Bay.

Situation:

  • DPIRD received a report of a possible shark incident at 11:45 am.
  • A female entered waist deep water off Sandland Island and was bitten by a reported 2.0m tiger shark at approximately 11:30 am.
  • DPIRD is working with local authorities to coordinate responses.

What to do:

  • Take additional caution in the Sandland Island and Jurien Bay area.
  • Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA.
  • Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.
