Shark INCIDENT at Port Smith Beach near Broome

UPDATE on 9 June at 9:45 am:

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) continues to work with local authorities to support the responses.

DPIRD officers will be conducting land-based patrols at Port Smith Beach and the surrounding area.

DPIRD recommends additional caution in the Port Smith Beach area

Alert Issued 9 June 2024

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is currently coordinating the response for a shark incident at Port Smith Beach in Shire of Broome.

Situation:

  • A male spear fishing was bitten by a reported 2m unknown species shark at approximately 5:30pm 8 June. 

What to do:

  • Take additional caution in the Port Smith Beach area.
  • Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA.
  • Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.
