Shark INCIDENT at Greenough River Mouth Beach near Geraldton

Following yesterday’s reported shark interaction, Rangers from the City of Greater Geraldton have reopened Greenough River Mouth Beach. 

DPIRD recommends additional caution in the Greenough River Mouth Beach area.

Alert issued on 1 December 2024

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is currently coordinating the response for a shark incident at Greenough River Mouth Beach in the City of Greater Geraldton.

Situation:

  • A male body boarder was bitten by a reported one metre unknown species of shark at approximately 10:30 am.
  • The incident was reported to DPIRD at approximately 11:20 am.
  • Rangers from the City of Greater Geraldton have closed Greenough River Mouth Beach and it will remain closed for the duration of the afternoon. 

What to do:

  • Take additional caution in the Greenough River Mouth Beach area.
  • Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA (SLSWA).
  • Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or follow @SLSWA on X (formerly Twitter).
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and @SLSWA on X.

DPIRD is working with local authorities to coordinate responses.
