Shark ADVICE for the WA Shark Monitoring Network - Perth Metropolitan area

Update on 9 August at 11:45 am

Scheduled maintenance of the Shark Monitoring Network receivers at Cottesloe, Leighton and Port Beach has now been completed. These receivers are fully operational.

The receivers located at 3.5 km off Trigg, Sorrento, Swanbourne and Garden Island remain offline and require further onsite maintenance to restore service to these receivers.

If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.

 Update 2 August 2024 11:40 am

Due to scheduled maintenance of the Shark Monitoring Network, the receivers located at Cottesloe and Leighton are currently offline.

The receiver located at Port Beach remains offline.

Update on 24 July at 12:15 pm

Scheduled maintenance of the shark monitoring receivers at North Cottesloe, City Beach and Scarborough has now been completed. These receivers are now fully operational.

The receiver located at Port Beach remains offline and will require further maintenance to restore service to this receiver.

Alert issued on 14 July 2024

Alert level:

A shark ADVICE has been issued for Western Australian water users, due to a planned system outage affecting the Shark Monitoring Network.

Situation:

  • Due to scheduled maintenance, tagged shark detections from the Shark Monitoring Network will be offline from 8:00 am, Monday 15 July 2024. 
  • The system outage is affecting Port Beach, North Cottesloe, City Beach and Scarborough shark monitoring receivers. 
  • Reported shark sightings are not affected by this outage and will be published as normal through the Shark Notification System.

What to do:

  • Take additional caution in the Port Beach, North Cottesloe, City Beach and Scarborough area.
  • Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA.
  • Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed. 

What authorities are doing: 

The relevant authorities that receive shark notifications to assist them in responses have been notified of the outage; including Surf Life Saving WA, WA Police and relevant local government rangers.

DPIRD will be working to restore the system to full operational status as soon as possible.
