Shark ADVICE for the WA Shark Monitoring Network

The system outage for the Shark Monitoring Network has now been resolved and the Shark Notification System is fully operational again.

Alert issued on 22 February
Alert level:
A shark ADVICE has been issued for Western Australian water users due to a system outage affecting the shark monitoring network.
Situation:
- Officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development are investigating a system outage for tagged shark detections from our satellite-linked receivers.
- The system outage is affecting all 30 receivers in the Shark Monitoring Network.
- A report was received from the technical team this afternoon advising of the issue and efforts are currently underway to investigate the fault in order to restore the service as soon as possible.
- Public shark sighting reports and reports from the Surf Life Saving WA helicopter patrols are not affected and are being published as normal through the Shark Notification System.
- This outage is not affecting the scientific non-lethal SMART drumline trial.
What to do:
- Adhere to any beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers or Surf Life Saving WA.
- Keep informed of the latest sighting information by checking the SharkSmart website or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
- If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to response agencies and to the public on the SharkSmart website and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed.
What authorities are doing:
The relevant authorities that receive Shark Monitoring Network alerts to assist them in responses have been notified of the outage; including the Surf Life Saving WA, WA Police and relevant local government rangers.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will be working to restore the system to full operational status as soon as possible.
