Shark ADVICE for Surfers Point and Gas Bay, in Shire of Augusta-Margaret River

Services have been restored to the Shark Warning System (tower) at Gas Bay, Margaret River. All towers are now fully operational.

If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600.

Services have been restored to the Shark Warning System (tower) at Surfers Point, Margaret River.

The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River are continuing to work with contractors to restore the tower at Gas Bay to full operational status as soon as possible.

Alert issued on 12 November 

Alert level:

A shark ADVICE has been issued for Surfers Point and Gas Bay in the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River water users, due to a technical fault affecting the shark warning towers at those locations. 

Situation:

  • The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) advise that the shark warning systems located at Surfers Point and Gas Bay are experiencing a technical fault and are currently offline. 
  • These are the only shark warning system towers out of service.
  • Restoration of the towers will require a maintenance crew to conduct onsite repairs work, which will be completed as soon as possible.  

What to do:

  • Take additional caution in the Surfers Point and Gas Bay areas.
  • Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA.
  • Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the SharkSmart website, SharkSmart WA app and Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed. 

What authorities are doing: 

The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River are working with contractors to restore the system to full operational status as soon as possible.
