Shark ADVICE for SharkSmart WA app and website

Update on 14 September at 2:20pm 

Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) advise that services have been restored to the SharkSmart WA app and website.

During the outage period, there was one white shark detected at the Bunker Bay (west) shark monitoring receiver at 09:58am. This detection information was posted to @SLSWA Twitter and provided to relevant land managers via text message.  The Bunker Bay Shark Warning System was automatically activated upon detection of the shark, notifying beach users. This information is now available on the SharkSmart WA app and website. 

Switch on your Sea Sense and stay informed of shark activity information by checking the SharkSmart website, download the SharkSmart WA app or follow Surf Life Saving Twitter.

If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. 

Alert issued on 13 September

Alert level:

A shark ADVICE has been issued for Western Australian water users due to scheduled maintenance of infrastructure used by the SharkSmart WA app and website. 

This essential maintenance will result in a temporary outage, whereby shark activity information will not be updated on the SharkSmart WA app and website.

All shark activity notifications, including reported sightings and tagged shark detections will be available on Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed during the outage period.  

Situation:

  • Essential maintenance on the SharkSmart WA app and website infrastructure is scheduled on Wednesday 14 September from 9:30am to 12:30pm.
  • During the scheduled maintenance, the SharkSmart WA app and website will not receive reported shark sighting or tagged shark detection information. It is expected to remain offline for approximately one hour during the maintenance period.  
  • Beach users are encouraged to check Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed during the outage period for reported shark sightings, tagged shark detections and beach safety information. 
  • An update will be provided once services to the SharkSmart WA app and website have been restored. 

What to do:

  • Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers, Parks and Wildlife Service officers or Surf Life Saving WA.
  • Use your Sea Sense and stay informed by checking for shark activity on Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to land managers and relevant authorities and to the public on the Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed. 
  • Any reported sightings or tagged shark detections which occur during the outage period will be added to the SharkSmart WA app and website following the completion of the scheduled maintenance. 

What authorities are doing: 

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) will be monitoring the systems during the scheduled maintenance and will provide an update when services have been restored.
