Shark ADVICE for Herald Bight, Denham

As an update to yesterday's report, a whale carcass has now been confirmed by Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. It was located at 2:00pm. 

It is possible the decomposing carcass will act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming close in to shore along this stretch of coast.

Water users should adhere to beach closures advised by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and people should exercise additional caution in the area.

Check the SharkSmart Activity Map or the Surf Life Saving Twitter feed before heading to your local beach.

Update on 16 September at 1.10pm

An inspection of the Herald Bight area, near Denham today, by officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), has not been able to locate the whale carcass that was reported to be washed onto a sandspit late yesterday.

DBCA officers will continue investigations in the area and provide a further update tomorrow.

At this stage, additional caution is recommended by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development in the Herald Bight area.

Water users should adhere to beach closures advised by local authorities and check the SharkSmart Activity Map or the Surf Life Saving Twitter feed before heading to their local beaches.

Alert issued on 15 September, 2018 

Alert level
A shark ADVICE has been issued due to a whale carcass being washed ashore. 

Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) officers have reported the carcass has been located on a sandspit, just south of Herald Bight, which is located adjacent to the Francois Peron National Park.

Situation:

  • A whale carcass has washed ashore and may attract sharks.
  • The decomposing carcass will continue to act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming close in to shore along this stretch of coast.
  • While it’s not uncommon for sharks to be present off the Western Australian coast throughout the year, people should exercise additional caution until the whale carcass is removed.

What to do:

  • Take additional caution in the Herald Bight area, near Denham.
  • Adhere to beach closures advised by Local Government Rangers or Surf Life Saving WA.
  • Keep informed of the latest detection and sighting information by checking the SharkSmart website or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
  • If you see a shark, report it to Water Police on 9442 8600. All shark sighting information reported to Water Police is provided to response agencies and to the public on the SharkSmart website and the Surf Life Saving WA Twitter feed. 

What authorities are doing:
DBCA officers are monitoring the situation and providing advice to relevant authorities. An update will be provided tomorrow (Sunday) morning.
