Fisheries officers deploy capture gear after fatal shark incident at Cheynes Beach

Beaches have been closed at Cheynes Beach near Bald Island, 60km east of Albany after a fatal shark incident late this morning.

The Department of Fisheries is currently investigating and has deployed equipment in an effort to catch the shark (most likely to be a white shark).
The department says beaches in this region are likely to remain closed tomorrow and urges local people and holiday makers to stay out of the water.
It has been confirmed that at about midday, a man suffered fatal injuries after being bitten by a shark. It is believed that he was spear fishing with another man off Cheynes Beach.
The department is working closely with Police, Department of Parks and Wildlife and the City of Albany.
Further information will be made available when possible.
Cheynes Beach is now closed and advice is that water users should:

Adhere to any beach closures which may be in place.
