Recent reports of western Australian salmon schools off Albany and the South West Coast are early reminders of the annual and much-awaited salmon run.

It’s good news for fishers that the salmon are turning up in time for Easter, with Good Friday and the school holidays kicking off on 29 March.

Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions have successfully removed the whale carcass from Hunters Access near BEN Sign EX2082, North West Cape.

Additional caution is recommended by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, as any residue from where the whale carcass was beached may still attract sharks to the area.

Update on 18 March at 1:40 pm

Officers from the City of Albany have now removed the whale carcass from Middleton Beach. 

Additional caution is recommended by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, as any residue from where the carcass was beached may still attract sharks to the area.

Update on 28 February 2024 at 11:50am

Fisheries officers from Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) and Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA), have completed an on-water patrol near Sandland Island and the surrounding area today, with no further shark sightings reported.

DBCA and the Shire of Dandaragan have reopened the beaches following the shark incident on Monday 26 February 2024.

DPIRD recommends additional caution in the Jurien Bay area.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is currently investigating a reported shark bite incident near Jurien Bay in the Shire of Dandaragan.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development advise that the Sorrento Shark Monitoring Network receiver has been replaced and services have been restored. The network is now fully operational.

Update on 7 February at 12:40pm  

Officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) have inspected the whale carcass which remains in place at False Island, east of Albany. Carcass remnants, including blubber remain in place on the rocks.

Additional caution is recommended by DPIRD, as the slowly decomposing whale carcass may attract sharks to the area.

Alert level:

A shark WARNING has been issued for Town Beach in the City of Mandurah after a reported shark interaction.

Services have been restored to the land-based Shark Warning System (tower) at Kelp Beds Beach.
