Shark ADVICE for partial Clever Buoy outage at City Beach

Current Alerts and Warnings

A shark ADVICE has been issued for Western Australian water users due to a partial outage in the Clever Buoy near-shore shark detection system which is currently being trialled at City Beach.

Updated 22/02: The partial outage has been resolved and the system is now fully operational.

Updated 21/02:

  • The south side of the Clever Buoy installation at City Beach remains offline and sonar detections from that part of the system are not currently operational. 
  • The north side of the Clever Buoy installation is now fully operational.
  • System operators, continue working to restore the Clever Buoy trial to full operational status.

New beach enclosure opens at Quinns Beach

  • Liberal National Government has invested more than $33 million on shark hazard mitigation

Quinns Beach is the latest coastal area to have a beach enclosure after it was officially opened today by Premier Colin Barnett.

"This is the fifth Government-funded beach enclosure now available to beach-goers along the Western Australian coastline," Mr Barnett said. 

"The Quinns Beach enclosure is 300 metres in length along the beach and about 85 metres out from the shore.  It will be in place all-year-round for a minimum of five years.

"Beach enclosures are an important component of the Liberal National Government's shark hazard mitigation strategy and are incredibly popular with swimmers and families.

Beachgoers in Perth's northern suburbs now have access to a protected swimming area after Premier Colin Barnett today officially opened the new Sorrento Beach enclosure.

"Beach enclosures are an important component of the Liberal National Government's shark hazard mitigation strategy and are proving to be incredibly popular with swimmers and families," Mr Barnett said.

"The Government has invested more than $33 million on shark hazard mitigation measures including research, public education, shark tagging, aerial patrols and a trial of drones.

"No single measure alone will protect water users from shark interactions, but a complementary suite of measures will reduce the risk."
