Shark INCIDENT for Quondong Beach near Broome

Update on 22 May at 2:20pm

Fisheries officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) have completed sea based patrols in the Quondong Beach area.

Patrols have concluded for today and DPIRD Fisheries officers will now resume routine operational patrols within the Broome area.  

DPIRD recommends additional caution in the Quondong Beach area.

Shark ADVICE for the WA Shark Monitoring Network

Update on 13 May 2021 at 5:45pm 

The planned system outage for the Shark Monitoring Network has concluded and receivers are back on line.

The Shark Notification System is fully operational again.

Tagged shark detection information has been reviewed during the time of the outage and no detections occurred during this period.

Boost for white shark tagging and monitoring in expanded mitigation program

  • McGowan Government commits a further $5 million for shark hazard mitigation
  • Increased funding for highly effective targeted shark tagging and upgrades to the Shark Monitoring Network
  • Support for beach enclosures and continuation of personal shark deterrent rebate scheme
  • SMART drumline trial ends on May 20, with use of the SMART drumlines to be discontinued following advice from the Chief Scientist of Western Australia.

Shark ADVICE for Point Peron Beach near Rockingham

The City of Rockingham has now removed the sea lion carcass from Point Peron Beach.

Additional caution is recommended by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, as any residue from where the sea lion carcass was beached may still attract sharks to the area.

Shark ADVICE for Rabbit Hill Surfing Spot, Yallingup

Parks and Wildlife Service officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions have successfully removed the seal carcass from Rabbit Hill Surfing Spot, Yallingup.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development recommends additional caution in the area.

There have been no further reported shark sightings.
