Services have been restored to the Shark Warning System (tower) at Lefthanders Surfing Spot car park, near Gracetown.  All towers within the SMART drumline trial area are now fully operational.

Alert level:

A shark ADVICE has been issued due to a sea lion carcass being reported at Dynamite Bay in Green Head in the Shire of Coorow.

A shark ADVICE has been issued due to a whale carcass being reported at Port Geographe Beach in Busselton in the City of Busselton

A shark ADVICE has been issued due to a confirmed shark sighting at Prawn Rock channel approximately 500 metres northwest of Denmark Surf Lifesaving Club in the town of Denmark.

Update on 10th February 2021 12:30pm

Officers from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) have successfully removed the whale carcass from Torpedo Bay near Exmouth.

It is possible that residue from the carcass will continue to act as an attractant that could lead to sharks coming close in to shore along this stretch of coast.

DPIRD Fisheries advise taking additional caution in the Torpedo Bay area.

Update on 9th February 2021 at 2:35pm

A Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions Regulation 44 closure notice remains in place within a 1 kilometre radius of Boullanger Island, Jurien Bay Marine Park. 

Beach access is permitted but swimming or entering the water is prohibited.

The closure will remain in place until the 16th February 2021.

A shark ADVICE has been issued due to a Dolphin carcass being reported at Rockingham Beach in the City of Rockingham.

Update 31st January 2021 5:45pm

DPIRD Fisheries Officers have inspected the whale carcass this morning 31st January and it continues to decompose slowly.

The remains consist of the head (only) from a large Sperm Whale.

The carcass will be left to decompose naturally due to it being already highly deteriorated and in a remote location with little access to the beach at Taylor Boat Harbour.

DPIRD Fisheries Officers will continue to monitor the situation and update SharkSmart as necessary.

The Shire of Augusta -Margaret River have reopened the beach between Huzza's Car Park and Cowaramup Boat Ramp at Gracetown.

DPIRD recommends additional caution at Cowaramup Bay beach and surrounding area.
